ART-LENS PRESENTS A GREAT ADVANCEMENT IN OCULAR PROSTHETICS: AN ARTIFICIAL EYE WITH A DILATING PUPIL

One of the greatest challenges that ocularists face in the production of external ocular prosthetics, whether they are made of glass or of resin, has always been that of finding ways to recreate the different diameters presented by the pupil as it reacts to changes in the intensity of light.

At present, an almost perfect result is achieved by assimilating the ocular prosthetic to the healthy eye using new production techniques along with the most state-of-the-art materials, but the lack of a pupil that changes in size takes away from its authenticity and realism.

In response to varying intensities of light, the size of the pupil of a healthy eye changes frequently. This affects the perception of the color of the iris, with the difference most evident between day and night.

This new system of pupil dilation consists of an internal mechanism that uses a magnet to change the size of the pupil depending on ambient conditions. The magnet is slid onto the ocular prosthetic by the patient.

The intent is to increase the confidence of ocular prosthetic users by making the artificial eye as realistic as possible and, in some cases, by eliminating the need to have two prosthetics for every occasion.

The development of the system of pupil dilation for the ocular prosthetic demonstrates how the interest in and love for this work can improve people's lives.

It is a great leap forward and a boost of confidence for the patient.
